Location
Moraira was formerly a sleepy fishing village on the shores of the Mediterranean with a mountain backdrop. Whilst it has grown into a popular tourist area, development has been limited to low rise buildings and it has retained much of its charm. The coastline is dotted with pines and has a combination of fine sandy beaches and rocky coves with crystal clear waters for swimming and snorkelling. The town has a castle built in 1742 and a wide choice of restaurants and bars. There is an array of restaurants around the harbour, many serving fresh locally caught seafood. The town has its share of lively Spanish fiestas, the most famous being the ‘Moors and Christians’ which takes place in June accompanied by spectacular firework displays. There is a weekly market just behind the town beach on Friday mornings where you can browse stalls brimming with fresh local produce, clothing, jewellery and local handicrafts.
The beaches around Moraira offer plenty of opportunity for sunbathing, swimming and water sports. The clear blue waters are particularly popular for snorkelling and the Mermaid Diving Centre in Moraira offers scuba diving tuition and equipment hire if you fancy giving this a try. In addition to Playa del Portet, the villa is within easy reach of the town’s main beach, Playa de L’Ampolla, beside Moraira Castle, which has a wide, gently shelving, sandy beach popular with families and a few beachside bars and cafes providing refreshments throughout the day. If you are looking for something a little quieter, there are plenty of other coves to explore such as Cala Punta Estrella, a little rocky cove reached via a steep stairway cut into the cliffs or the small sandy beach at Platgetes which has lots of rockswimming pools for snorkelling and a few beachside bars.
The region has a number of excellent golf courses, the nearest being the Javea Club near Benitachell and the 9-hole Ifach Club, both within a short drive of the villa. Benidorm, around 40 minutes away, has a huge choice of family entertainment on offer including the Terra Mitica Theme Park, Aqualandia water park and the Mundormar Marine Park featuring marine animal shows. Also within a 45 minute radius are the ‘Fuentes de Algar’ where you can swim in the plunge swimming pools of spectacular waterfalls and walk and picnic in the attractive mountainous landscape. The Vergel Safari Park, around 30 minutes from the villa, offers exciting close up views of lions, tigers and leopards to name but a few, with other activities on offer including go-karting, mini train rides and a children’s play area.
If you want to see a bit of traditional Spain, the ancient town of Teulada, just 6km from Moraira is worth a visit and has some excellent restaurants serving the local speciality seafood and rice dishes. Here you will find the San Vicente Ferrer wine cellar offering a good choice of local and regional wines. There is a single track railway which takes a scenic coastal route through mountainous countryside from Denia to Alicante , stopping at Teulada on the way. Javea, around 13km from Moraira also has an interesting historic centre with a maze of narrow streets lined with historical townhouses and attractive squares. Javea has an excellent indoor market selling fresh produce including fruit, cheeses and locally caught fish on Thursdays. There are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants here, not to mention the traditional tapas bars and art galleries – a great place to explore during the heat of the afternoon. The port area has an array of restaurants and snack bars where you can linger with a cold drink and watch the fishermen bring in their catch.
