Cefalù is set on the northern coast, 75 kilometres east of Palermo, from which it is about forty-five minutes by car, a bit longer by train. Cefalù is a picturesque medieval fishing village that enjoys a splendid position between the sea and a rocky promontory (Rocca of Cefalù). Cefalù is a built on the site of an ancient Sican an Greek settlement. The town saw its maximum development under the Norman King Roger II, The town nowadays is divided in two parts an old part that is mainly for pedestrians and has many nice little boutiques, shops and restaurants, and a new modern part.
The old town is dominated by the cathedral. According to tradition the cathedral and the adjoining abbey and cloister, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Saviour by the King of Sicily, Roger II, after he escaped from a storm to land on the citys beach. The building was started in 1131. Imposing and attractive, the cathedral is a synthesis of several cultures. It was built by Norman architects and Arabic craftsmen, conditioned by Byzantine models. The interior is dominated by the solemn rhythm of the colonnade and by the image of Christ Pantocrator : a breathtaking mosaic dating back to 1138 on a gold background dominating the apse, above the Madonna, archangels and Apostles.
Mandralisca Museum is also surely worth seeing. Mandralisca, next to the cathedral square, is famous for its library, containing about 6,000 antique volumes, for its numismatic collection and especially for the paint “Portrait of an Unknown Man” by Antonello da Messina, one of the most famous painters of the European fifteenth century. A Saracen wash-house, the Lavatoio is another sight worth seeing, as is the medieval Osterio Magno, the remaining part of a large 13th-century palace. In any case, the whole old town is worth visiting to admire the picturesque and charming alleys and medieval buildings.
Around Cefalù, places of interest include the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna - a hillside pilgrimage destination-, the ruins of Greek Himera, the Natural Park of Madonie mountains and Castelbuono - a mountain medieval town about 25 kilometres from Cefalù famous for the castle once owned by the Ventimiglia family, feudal lords of several towns in the area-.
