Auray. 40 km. Charming little town with attractive old quarter with delightful 15th and 16th century houses. Nearby Ste Anne d’Auray is Brittany’s most important place of pilgrimage drawing thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world all year round but especially on July 26th for its “Pardon de Ste Anne” which was attended by Pope John Paul II in 1996.
Pont Aven. 45 km. Artists’ haunt located inland from the tip of the Aven estuary. It is a small port popular with tourists and boasting many art galleries. Made famous by Gauguin when he came to paint in the 1880’s before leaving for Tahiti and inspired the Pont Aven school.
Pontivy. 50 km. Quaint market town with both a Napoleonic and medieval quarter overlooked by its fabulous 15th century moated castle. Situated on the banks of the Nantes to Brest Canal, it has a lovely atmosphere and boasts a large variety of restaurants and bars. Don’t miss the market every Monday morning!
Concarneau. 60 km. Fishing port with delightful fortified old city. Enjoy a stroll through the small town and don’t miss the famous Kouign Amann, a Breton cake full of butter and sugar. Very naughty but so delicious!
