In Southern Brittany, at the southern tip of the Rhuys peninula, between the Gulf of Morbihan and the Ocean. St Gildas de Rhuys boasts an impressive and fascinating church, dating in part from the 11th century.
Facing the ocean, the coastal path of Grand Mont takes you along steep cliffs and offers a view of Houat and Hoedic islands, and also Belle Ile on clear days.
St Gildas is also renowned for its large sandy and sheltered beaches, great for families.

PLACES TO VISIT:
Rhuys Peninsula. Between the Gulf of Morbihan and the Atlantic ocean, it boasts long sandy beaches, a golf course directly on the Atlantic coast, small fishing ports and the typical weekly markets. A paradise for sailors and watersports enthusiasts.
Port du Crouesty. eight km. Modern and popular port, one of the largest in Brittany, with lively yachting marina packed with cafes, restaurants and shops.
Gulf of Morbihan. Inland sea dotted with attractive and picturesque little islands (one for each day of the year !) offering an exceptional panorama that can be enjoyed by boat or during a walk along the coast.
Vannes. 35 km. Delightful and lively city with narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings crammed around its cathedral. Outside the old walled town, the large colourful port shelters many yachts and is the point of departure for scenic boat trips to the Gulf of Morbihan islands.

Golf de Rhuys-Kerver, St Gildas de Rhuys. four km. Golf course. 18 holes Par 72 - 5989m. At the heart of Southern Brittany bird reserve, next to herons and egrets, an authentic seaside course. Rolling greens and plenty of water features.
Château de Suscinio, Sarzeau. ten km. Impressive 13th century moated fortress and home of various Dukes of Brittany. The castle also houses a museum of the history of Brittany and the Morbihan area.
Aquarium du Golfe, Vannes. 35 km. Aquarium. 50 tanks taking you from the Morbihan Gulf to the Red Sea via the Amazon. A refreshing visit for the whole family.
Parc de Branféré, Le Guerno. 40 km. Animal park.Very pleasant vast open air animal park with over 120 species and some 1,000 animals from around the world. In a attractive setting, with the lovely backdrop of Château Branféré.
FURTHER AFIELD:
Auray. 45 km. Charming little town with attractive old quarter with delightful 15th and 16th century houses. Nearby Ste Anne d’Auray is Brittany’s most important place of pilgrimage drawing thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world all year round but especially on July 26th for its “Pardon de Ste Anne” which was attended by Pope John Paul II in 1996.
Rochefort en Terre. 50 km. One of the most delightful villages in Brittany with every available stone surface, from the window ledges to the picturesque wishing well, adorned with colourful flowers. The village narrow cobbled streets with a variety of crafts workshops lead up to the medieval castle which is open for guided visits.
Carnac. 60 km. Sought-after and lively seaside resort with excellent sandy beaches. Also renowned for its impressive prehistoric standing stones. A wide range of watersport activities are available as well as a good selection of restaurants and bars.
Quiberon. 75 km. Stylish seaside resort with attractive beaches on the rocky peninsula of the same name. The windswept eastern side of the peninsula is popular with watersports enthusiasts whilst the sheltered main beach is lined with a variety of bars, cafes and restaurants. Boat crossings to Belle Ile.
